In 2009, Anuradha Patel and her husband, Kanwaljit Singhannounced the name of Mary Barackjoy as an additional member of her family. Talking to the media from a media house, Kanwaljit Singh said that he has a daughter named Maryam whom he did not adopt legally. he said,

We have a daughter Maryam Barakjoy who now calls herself Maryam Singh Barakjoy.

In the same conversation, he said that everything in his life equally belonged to Mary. he said,

Today I have three children. Whatever I have belongs to Mary. There is a very good bonding between Maryam, Siddharth, Aditya and I. Life is all about attachment. ,

According to Anuradha and Kanwaljit Singh, Maryam was eight years old when she shifted to America from Afghanistan. At the Delhi airport, Maryam met Kanwaljit Singh at a guest house. However, after this meeting, they lost contact with each other. Four years later, Maryam traced and contacted Kanwaljit Singh through an email. He remembered,

I don’t know how Maryam got my e-mail id and wrote to me that she considers me her father. In fact, she had a stepfather who didn’t treat her very well.”

Reportedly, Anuradha and Kanwaljit Singh saw in Maryam’s needs as she called Kanwaljeet her father. However, Kanwaljeet once clarified in a media interview that Maryam was an independent girl who works in Santiago, United States and frequently visits Mumbai.
