Archana Sharma married Dr Sunit Upadhyay on 1 March 2010.
They have a son Raghav and a daughter Shambhavi.
Archana held the position of Associate Professor and Unit Head at Government Medical College, Gujarat. Later, she joined Anand Hospital, Lalsot as an obstetrician and gynecologist along with her husband.
Archana Sharma died on 30 March 2022 after committing suicide in Dausa, Rajasthan. He was charged with the murder of Asha Bairwa, a twenty-two-year-old woman. Archana operated on Asha and had a successful delivery, but after some time Asha died due to PPH (postpartum haemorrhage). After Asha’s death, her relatives took her body home, but after a few hours they brought the body back to the hospital. A Bharatiya Janata Party leader came with her family and started gathering people and police in front of the hospital. The police have filed an FIR against Archana under Section 302 alleging murder. Archana was scared and tensed by the FIR and committed suicide. He left a suicide note in which he had written ‘Don’t disturb innocent doctors.’ He also added,
I love my husband and kids very much. Please don’t disturb them after my death. I didn’t do anything wrong, didn’t kill anyone. PPH is a known complication. Stop bothering doctors so much for this. May my death prove my innocence. Do not disturb innocent doctors. please. I love you. Don’t let my children feel the lack of their mother.”
A video posted by her husband on social media brought the matter into limelight. In the video, he told the whole story and demanded justice for his wife. In the video he said,
Action should be taken against the police. How did they register a case of section 302 (murder) against him? There should be a law to stop harassing doctors and asking them for money. My wife is dead, but what about the other innocent doctors?”
Chief Minister of Rajasthan, Ashok Gehlot Expressed grief through a Twitter post on the death of Archana. He also ordered the removal of Dausa district’s SP Anil Kumar and also suspended the SHO (Station House Officer). In the tweet, he wrote,
The incident of Dr. Archana Sharma’s suicide is very sad. We consider doctors as God. Every doctor tries his best to save the life of the patients, but it is not fair to blame the doctors for any untoward incident.
The Indian Medical Association (IMA) also demanded justice for Archana and held rallies.
