Chirag Kotwal was born in a middle Hindu class family in Bhaderwah, Jammu. He completed his high school from a local school in Jammu and later moved to Mumbai to pursue engineering from Veermata Jijabai Technical Institute. Meanwhile, he also took music training from Ajivasan Music Academy.

Chirag started participating in music competitions in school at the age of 6. After gaining some confidence, he started appearing in local shows in Jammu. In 2013, he moved to Chandigarh to perform opposite Vishal Dadlani and Shreya Ghoshal for the Indian Idol Junior show. He later received sponsorship for Indian Idol Junior from one of his show producers Mr Parwana. Shri Parwana also sent him to a music guru, Pandit Hari Krishna Sharma.
In 2020, Chirag got a golden ticket in Indian Idol Season 12 in 2020 but was eliminated in the theater round itself. He continued to participate in Indian Idol auditions and became the top 15 contestants of Indian Idol 13 in 2022.
