I met him when the string’s journey was just beginning. In 2000, my eldest son Armaan was born. He was born right after we came back from shooting the music video for Dur. After that Gibran was born in 2004. So over the last 20 years the kids have grown up and now I really want to spend some time with them, and then see where and what inspires me.
Faisal Kapadia started his music career during his graduation days when he formed the music band ‘Strings’ with his friends Bilal Maqsood, Rafiq Wazir Ali and Karim Bashir Bhoy. Initially, the band was signed to EMI Records. Despite selling 20,000 copies in its first week, his early forays with synthesized sounds and rhythms were not immediately recognized. Two years later, the band released their second album, ‘2’, which featured their first hit song, ‘Sar Kye Ye Paha’. The song earned The Strings wide critical recognition as a music band. After the release of their second album, the group members decided to take a break from it to focus on their studies for the final exams. To maintain the band’s fame, Faisal Kapadia and Bilal Maqsood agreed to release a new song in 2000. This song was called ‘Dur’, and it was followed by another song called ‘Dhani’ (2003).
In 2004, the Pakistani singer and musician made his Hollywood debut with his band. He composed the song for ‘Najaane Kyun’ for the American superhero film ‘Spider-Man 2’.
Pakistani pop music earned a cult following in India around 2002. After that, Strings toured India with local music networks, collaborating with their Indian counterparts. The band recorded Jeet Lo Dil with New Delhi-based Euphoria, which marked their cross-border success. The song was chosen as the official theme song for the Indian cricket team’s tour of Pakistan. After that, they signed a deal with Gibson Guitar Corporation, making them one of only two South Asian bands with Water to have a working partnership with a guitar producer. Strings released their single Ab Khud Kuch Karna Parega in July 2010, featuring former Jal singer Atif Aslam.
Faisal Kapadia made his Bollywood debut in 2005 with his music band ‘Strings’. The band’s vocalist Faisal sang the song “Yeh Hai Meri Kahani” for the Hindi-language action thriller film Zinda directed by Sanjay Gupta. The band also recorded music for another Bollywood film, Shootout at Lokhandwala in 2007, directed by Sanjay Gupta. He wrote the song ‘Aakhri Alvida’ which became an instant hit. Later in the same year, Faisal Kapadia and his crew composed the song ‘Charon Tarf’ for Ahishor Solomon’s film ‘John Day’.
Faisal Kapadia debuted at Coke Studio 14 Without Any Wires (2022). Because of Zulfi, he considers it a watershed moment of his career. When asked about her debut at Coke Studio, she said,
The turning moment for me was when I got a call from Zulfi.” I was on a family vacation in the summer of ’21, when she called to ask if I wanted to perform the song, and I told her, ‘Zulfi bhai, I have never seen myself producing music after strings.’ But that 30-minute conversation was so inspiring that I felt as if fate was calling me. “The musician in me was once again enthralled.”
Phir Milenge, his first song, is strong and soulful, with a simple raga structure that is neither superfluous nor excessive. Faisal’s vocals, his heavy voice, and the blazing, violent energy of the Young Stunners turned the song into a tribute to someone who once loved and then left them. The three actors are seen walking through a maze filled with beautiful textures and memories displayed on the walls in the video. The singers travel together but never meet, in search of the artifacts they have left behind. The video was recorded in a single take by filmmaker Zeeshan Parvez and his brave team.
Facts / Trivia
- Faisal loves collaborating with Young Stunners, another Pakistani rap and hip hop combo, featuring vocals by Talha Anjum and Talha Younis. He enthusiastically described his experience with them as follows
It’s important to grow and try new things. When I first met the Young Stunners on set, and I played them a rap song that Strings made years ago, they might not have even been born! For their part, the Young Stunners don’t imitate Drake like Pakistani boys, they sound like city kids with clear eyes that get off their chests. Add to that Faisal’s trademark croon, and we have a song that makes us feel like there’s hope right around the corner. ,
I realized that I have a lot to learn after CS, especially while working with the Young Stunners. I have resolved to work with more new people, especially the youth. I even instructed Zulfi to lead me in the entire song. Because there are many areas that I have yet to explore. I’m not looking for hits; I want to experiment and try new things. They say if you don’t try, you have already lost. But if you try, chances are you will succeed.”
- According to Faisal Kapadia, he firmly believes that it doesn’t matter whether something is big or small, as long as it inspires someone. Someone’s life will be beautiful if they sleep every night waiting for the morning because you want to do this thing all over again. This kind of inspiration can be found in anything, in sports or in anything you like. He looks forward to the moments that inspire him and he wants to keep learning.
- Faisal Kapadia and Bilal Maqsood formally confirmed the end of their band via Instagram on March 25, 2021. Following the news of the band’s split, there was a huge emotional breakdown between fans and followers. During a media interaction, when Faisal Kapadia was asked about this, he said,
Strings decided to end their journey last year, I personally think we were really lucky that we made that decision,…. In 1992, after releasing their second album Sir Kiya Yeh Pahar, We discontinued it, only to return in 2000 to make more music. We also did several seasons of Coke Studio. But last year, after we realized how far we’ve come and how much we didn’t want to spoil, we left it permanently. The songs that Bilal and I have composed together are there to stay. Songs keep us alive even when the artist is gone. I will follow them; Bilal will do. If you know us closely, you will know that Bilal and I have always been opposites. As strings, we completed each other. Where I was weak, he was strong, and vice versa. Because of this we learned a lot from each other. We are not letting it go. We will make something new out of it.”
