Fonda was a visible political activist in the counterculture era during the Vietnam War. He was photographed sitting on a North Vietnamese anti-aircraft gun on a trip to Hanoi in 1972, during which he earned the nickname “Hanoi Jane”. At the same time, he has also opposed the Iraq war.
