He began his career as a war journalist for the BBC in 1984, debuting in El Salvador in 1989. It has been reported from more than 70 countries, most of which are in the Middle East and the Balkans. He reported from Bosnia-Herzegovina during the Bosnian War, and in 1999 during the fighting in Kosovo, he was robbed at gunpoint by bandits. Bowen was photographing the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) withdrawal from Lebanon when his car came under IDF tank fire, killing his “fixer” and the driver. Bowen and his cameraman managed to escape, but Bowen suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder and was forced to work as a studio presenter instead.

He also appeared as a guest host on the satirical panel game Have I Got News for You and in 2001 presented the BBC’s three-part investigation into the life of the Son of God, Jesus.
