career

Jeremy started his training in boxing at the age of 6. His father, a former boxer, used to train him in boxing. When he was 7 years old, he used to go to a gym center in his village. There he used to see boys doing training and weightlifting. From there he developed an interest in weightlifting. Recalling those days in an interview, he said,

I used to see boys training in a gym near my house. They used to lift weights. This got me excited. It gave me the impetus I needed to try my hand at the game. I contacted the boys at the gym and asked them if they could teach me how to lift. I started doing it and started lifting weights with perfection. Maybe God wanted me to become a weightlifter someday.

Jeremy then approached Malasawma Khiangte (his first coach) to provide him with professional training in weightlifting. Talking about this during an interview, Jeremy said,

I reached near Malasavama. It was he who taught me professional weightlifting lessons. He used to ask me to bring a bamboo and to lift it slowly. They were 5 meters long and 20 mm wide. There was no weight on them, but it was harder to actually lift a stick than a load because you had to know how to balance it. it’s really hard. I practiced day and night, learned the art of balancing by lifting bamboo sticks.”

At the age of 9, he was selected in talent scouting by the Army Sports Institute (ASI), Pune. He then continued his training in weightlifting at ASI and participated in various national and international weightlifting competitions. Later, Jeremy joined the Indian National Camp in Patiala where he trained under his coach Vijay Sharma.
