sippy sidhu murder case
Sukhmanpreet Singh Sidhu alias Sippy Sidhu was shot dead by some unidentified person in a park in Sector 27, Chandigarh on 20 September 2015. According to the police, a .12 bore gun was used in the crime and about four bullets were fired at it. After this, the UT police had registered a case of murder at Sector 26 police station. Sidhu’s family accused Sippy’s ex-girlfriend Kalyani of murder. According to Sidhu’s mother,
We told the police that the judge’s husband and one of his relatives had threatened Sippy, after which I asked him to be alert. The judge’s daughter also came to our house in August and asked Sippy if he would marry her. We suspect that he was murdered for refusing to marry the girl. The real culprit will be revealed in the police investigation.
In 2016, the case was transferred to the CBI on the request of the Chandigarh Administration. Kalyani’s alleged role in the murder case came to light during the preliminary investigation by the CBI. The agency further filed an undisclosed report before the court, requesting further investigation into Kalyani’s role. In September 2016, the CBI announced a cash reward of Rs. 5 lakhs for anyone leading up to Sidhu’s killer who can help the agency solve the case. Later, while giving an advertisement in a newspaper, the CBI said,
There is reason to believe that Sippy’s killer was accompanied by a woman at the time of the murder. The said woman is also being given a chance to come forward and contact us if she is innocent. Otherwise it will be presumed that she was a party to the offense.”
In 2021, the agency increased the prize money to Rs. 10 lakh and requested the general public to come forward if they have any important information about the murder. However, the CBI failed to proceed with the case. During the hearing, the CBI asked the court to give one month’s time to the agency to file a status report. In June 2022, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in its application seeking Kalyani’s remand for 10 days, stated that it wanted to interrogate Kalyani to find another person involved in the crime and the weapons and vehicles used in the crime. was. CBI spokesperson said,
During further investigation the alleged involvement of the accused (Kalyani Singh) in the case came to light. Accordingly, he was investigated and arrested. ,
On the other hand, Kalyani’s lawyers opposed the request for police remand by the CBI and termed it as an abuse of law. They said,
This is a six year old case and an untrace report was also filed by the CBI. She (Kalyani) had earlier joined the investigation but nothing objectionable was found against her.
However, the Special Judicial Magistrate, CBI Chandigarh, Sukhdev Singh rejected the plea made by Kalyani’s counsel and granted four days remand for Kalyani. Sukhdev Singh said in his decision,
Though this is an old case and the earlier attempts to uncover the real events of the crime were not successful, the CBI kept on trying to collect the evidence. Reducing police remand at this stage will make the investigation fail at the initial stage itself.
The court directed Kalyani’s lawyers to remain present during the investigation at the police station without actively participating or interfering in the investigation process. The court allowed Kalyani, under investigation, to use her own clothes during the CBI custody.
CBI disclosed
murder due to refusal to marry
The CBI investigation concluded that Kalyani was in a relationship with Sippy and wanted to marry him. However, Sippy’s family did not approve of their relationship, which apparently led to Sidhu’s murder. Explaining the reason behind the murder of Sippy in a conversation with the media, the CBI said,
She wanted to marry him but Sippy’s family turned down his proposal. Sippy had leaked her objectionable pictures to her parents and friends, causing embarrassment to Kalyani and her family.”
CBI further said,
Kalyani contacted Sippy on September 18, 2015 through other people’s mobile phones and forced her to meet him at a park in Sector 27, Chandigarh, where the two met between September 18 and September 20, the night of his meeting. There was murder. ,
Conspiracy accused Kalyani
The CBI investigation also revealed that Kalyani had conspired with an unknown assailant to eliminate Sippy Sidhu. Apparently, he called Sippy several times and forced her to meet him at a park in Sector 27, Chandigarh. When Sippy reached there, he attacked him with a gun. During the interaction with the media, the CBI said,
The post-mortem report of the deceased Sukhmanpreet Singh Sidhu shows that the murder was committed using short gun shotgun ammunition. ,
The CBI further said that both Kalyani and her accomplice were seen running away from the spot after the murder of Sippy. Some sources revealed that at the time of the murder, a Maruti Zen car, the last four digits of which was “1183”, was seen at the scene. During the hearing, the CBI spokesperson said,
