Kanhaiya Lal, a tailor from Udaipur, Rajasthan, was brutally murdered by two Muslims in broad daylight on 28 June 2022. This incident shook the country. Reportedly, he killed Kanhaiya Lal for sharing a social media post in support of the suspended BJP leader. Nupur Sharma Who was expelled from the primary membership of the Bharatiya Janata Party in June 2022 after making derogatory remarks against Prophet Muhammad and the Muslim community during a TV debate. Kanhaiya Lal Teli was born in 1982 (age 40 years; at the time of death) in Maldas Street, Udaipur, Rajasthan.

Why was Kanhaiya Lal killed?
On 10 June 2022, Nazim, a neighbor of Kanhaiya Lal, filed an FIR against Kanhaiya Lal for using suspended BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma’s photo as DP on his mobile phone. Nupur Sharma was in news for her controversial statements about Prophet Muhammad in a television debate. Later, Nazim confessed that he had lodged the FIR under pressure from the Muslim community as he knew that Kanhaiya Lal did not know how to use a mobile phone. After the FIR, the police arrested Kanhaiya Lal; However, he was released on bail the same day. Reportedly, it was Kanhaiya Lal’s 8-year-old son who mistakenly used Nupur Sharma’s photo as DP on his mobile phone. Later, two persons came to Kanhaiya Lal’s shop and told him that someone had shared a controversial post on his mobile phone after which he deleted the post. And after the FIR, he deleted the post. After being released on bail, Kanhaiya Lal lodged an FIR against Nazim and five others, who were planning to kill him as his mobile post went viral on social media. Kanhaiya Lal said in his complaint that he was being threatened by these people to open the shop. Later the SHO called a meeting between the two communities and reached an agreement between them and both the parties also gave written statement that they have resolved the issues between them.
On June 28, 2022, at around 2.30 pm, two accused, Gaus Mohammad and Mohammad Riyaz, reached Supreme Tailors, Kanhaiya Lal’s shop located in Dhanmandi, near Bhootmahal in Udaipur. Reportedly, one of the accused attacked Kanhaiya Lal with a sharp weapon while Kanhaiya Lal was taking measurements to sew a pair of trousers, while another accused filmed the incident on a mobile phone. The gruesome murder of Kanhaiya Lal sparked outrage and sporadic incidents of violence in the state, where prohibitory orders were imposed for a month and section 144 was imposed in Rajasthan for a month. Curfew has also been imposed in seven police station areas of Udaipur city till further orders. After the body of Kanhaiya Lal was found on 29 June 2022, the family members demanded similar punishment to the accused.
Center directs NIA to take over investigation
Amid the uproar over the brutal murder of Kanhaiya Lal, the Center on June 29, 2022 directed the National Investigation Agency (NIA) to take up the probe and “thoroughly investigate” the involvement of any organization or international relations in connection with the incident. Gave. Union Home Minister Amit Shah took to Twitter to announce the decision. he said,
The MHA has directed the NIA to take over the probe into the brutal murder of Kanhaiya Lal Teli (tailor) in Udaipur, Rajasthan. The involvement of any organization and international relations will be thoroughly investigated.”
Reportedly, one of the major reasons behind the Center joining the NIA was that the accused had directly threatened Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a video claiming responsibility for the attack.

Rajasthan DGP while addressing the press conference said that an accused named Ghosh Mohammad had gone to Karachi in 2014 for Dawat-e-Islami. The DGP also said that Kanhaiya Lal’s killing was being treated as a terror act, and he registered a case under UAPA.
