Kotwal Ramchandra was an Indian underworld don. From the 1970s to the 1980s, he was a popular name in the world of gangsters in Bangalore. He was assassinated on 22 March 1986 by their rivalry.

Kotwal started his career as a sailor in the Indian Navy. However, he fled his unit and was declared a fugitive. While he was in his village, some politicians approached him for assistance in various political campaigns, Kotwal agreed to this, and he was then appointed as the driver cum bodyguard of D Devaraj Urs, the then Chief Minister of Karnataka. Kotwal once threatened former Karnataka Chief Minister Ramakrishna Hegde with a knife in an open house. The incident was captured by various media houses and the photo went viral. Thereafter he started getting involved in various criminal activities. In the 1970s, he became one of the top gangsters in Bangalore. He once threatened a chief minister’s daughter because her father had ordered the arrest of the Kotwal. The Kotwal had political backing so he was confident that he would never be arrested. Earlier, the Kotwal had an alliance with a gangster named Jayaraj, but in the greed of power, they became a rivalry. Kotwal carried out his criminal activities in North and South Bengaluru while Jayaraj was confined to Central Bengaluru. Later, Jayaraj was arrested for assaulting a man named Thigallarapete Gopi in the premises of a court, for which he was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment. This helped the Kotwals to gain power over the territories of Jayaraj and he started carrying out criminal activities in central Bengaluru. When Jayaraj was released from prison, Kotwal and another gangster Tel Kumar had gained control of their (Jayaraj’s) territories. Jayaraj then hired 4 goons with the help of a gangster named Agni Sridhar to kill the Kotwal.


On 22 March 1986, Kotwal’s rival Jayaraj along with some other gangsters murdered Kotwal at a farmhouse near Allasandra in Tumkur, Bengaluru. They then dumped Kotwal’s bones in the Bay of Bengal and replaced his bones with dog bones to confuse the police during the investigation. Talking about the murder of Kotwal during an interview, underworld thug Sitaram Shetty said,

we hit the kotwali [Ramachandra] With a sharp weapon on the head. Bachchan was hit on the neck and head. Sridhar struck with his nunchaku. The Kotwal died without any resistance.”

  • After leaving the Indian Navy, he started a shop in his village in Shimoga.
  • In 2007 a Kannada film titled ‘Aa Dinagalu’ was released which depicted the rise and murder of Kotwal Ramachandra.
