When Manuraj Singh Rajput was a child, he was inspired by his mother to learn music and singing. He started singing religious songs in local temples at the age of eleven. Guru Rakesh Bansiwala ji was the first music teacher of Manuraj Singh Rajput, who taught music at a temple named Bihari ji in Bharatpur, Rajasthan. His music teacher and his musical skills were described by Manuraj Singh Rajput in one of his blog writings. Manuraj Singh Rajput wrote,
He runs a tea stall and the melodious sound of his flute still resonates in the temple. When I learned something from him, he started playing flute in stories, hymns and temples. When the stage performance was given in the town hall of Bharatpur, the audience used to applaud a lot.
Soon after completing his schooling, Manuraj Singh Rajput was sent to Jaipur by his parents to pursue a degree in engineering. According to Manuraj Singh, he got admission in Jaipur College, but he never went to study there. Manuraj Singh Rajput was so inclined towards music and singing that he dropped out of college and moved to Delhi to learn music from his second music teacher, Ravi Prasanna. His financial expenses were borne by his close friends, and Manuraj Singh Rajput used to lie to his parents that he was attending a regular college. In one of his writings, he wrote,
The flute used to resonate in my mind every day, so here I started learning flute from Sandeep Soni sir. During this, college friends helped a lot. They used to pay my fine with their pocket money. While training in B.Tech, I started lying down at home and started training with Ravi Prasanna sir in Delhi. In two months of engineering training, I took training in ‘Flute’. The real struggle started after that.”
Manuraj Singh Rajput learns music from Maihar Gharana of Music and belongs to him. Manuraj Singh Rajput had said in one of his blogs that he is a disciple of Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia of Mumbai. Manuraj Singh Rajput further mentions in his writings that Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia did not enter his Gurukul easily. Initially, one had to learn basic musical skills and traits in a particular stream from other teachers of the Gurukul. Manuraj Singh Rajput said that he used to travel 1300 km from Bharatpur to Mumbai to get officially enrolled in Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia’s Gurukul and learn flute from him. She wrote,
Guruji does not allow anyone to enter so easily, but the notes I got from there, I used to come to Bharatpur and practice them for six to eight hours every day. Pandit ji saw my marriage and was pleased. I told him that this is my last year of engineering, if I don’t get your support then I will have to do engineering job on the will of family.
Manuraj Singh Rajput further mentioned his struggle to get admission in Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia’s Gurukul in Mumbai. He was highly inspired by the words and sayings of Swami Vivekananda during his struggle period. ‘On the day life doesn’t get in trouble, understand that you are on the wrong path’ is one of Manraj Singh Rajput’s favorite quotes from Swami Vivekananda. He further wrote that he also gets six months flute training at Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia’s Orissa Gurukul. From 2011 to 2015, Manuraj Singh Rajput received formal flute training from Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia at his Mumbai Sangeet Gurukul.
Later, Manuraj Singh Rajput started performing in various live concerts and stage shows in India and outside the country. Venues where he frequently performs stage shows and live concerts are University of California, San Francisco, University of Pittsburgh, New York White Light Festival, University of Georgia (Atlanta), Sony Center Canada as well as Nrityagram Dance Ensemble, Embassy of India Poland ( Europe), Asolo Theater Florida, Los Angeles, China Festival, Dubai, Doha, South Africa, Indonesia and many more.
