In 2017, Nilotpal Mrinal campaigned against a website named ‘Lallantop’ which had uploaded a derogatory picture insulting the people of Bihar. Thereafter, Mrinal appealed to the court to take the initiative to remove the picture as it hurt the sentiments of Biharis and it was successful.

Copyright infringement allegations against Viral Fever (TVF)
In 2021, Nilotpal Mrinal accused the makers of TVF’s ‘Aspirants’ of plagiarism. In a lengthy Facebook post, he claimed that the upcoming web series was based on Mrinal’s 2015 book ‘Dark Horse’. In the post, he shared a picture of TVF founder Arunabh Kumar and said,
“Shared Anubhav’s picture and meeting details with him to prove that he knew me as the author of Dark Horse and was also aware of my interests to make a film based on the book.”
Mrinal also expressed his desire to initiate legal action against TVF for copying uncredited about 30% of the story of his book. Following this, TVF released an official statement which read,
“TVF is a producer-centric organization that has been nurturing writers since inception and takes their rights very seriously. A social media post alleged that our show “Aspirants” is inspired by another literary work The company has received a notice in this. It is concerned and we will fully cooperate in the investigation of the matter.”

In 2022, Delhi Police filed an FIR against Nilotpal Mrinal after a 32-year-old woman accused him of raping her on the pretext of marriage. Reportedly, the victim was a UPSC aspirant from Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh and lived in Mukherjee Nagar to prepare for the exam. The victim alleged that after she became acquainted with the author in 2013, he sexually assaulted her for ten years. FIR read,
“In 2013 she went to AIIMS for eye treatment and was late while returning home, for which he abused and assaulted her. I started crying but he raped me. The next day, he came and started apologizing. He even promised to marry me.”
Further, he claimed that Mrinal feared police action, so he agreed to marry her. However, through his cellphone, the victim came to know that he was in a relationship with another woman.
