Non government organization

After completing his MBA in London, he returned to Mumbai and started ‘Swabhiman Sangathan’, an NGO that works to address various social issues such as basic health services, infrastructure and unemployment. Along with the NGO, he started supporting his father in his political career with the Congress Party. In 2008, Viral Dholakia, one of the members of Swabhiman Sangathan, died in police lathi-charge while he was protesting in front of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation headquarters. In 2010, Nitesh, along with other Congress workers, had an argument with Shiv Sainiks at Dadar station over flagging off a train to Konkan.

Later, the then State Congress President Manikrao Thackeray did not like the growing influence of Swabhiman and asked Nitesh to stop the activities of the NGO. Thackeray said that when the Youth Congress was there, there was no need to run a parallel organization. After the incident, Nitesh left the city youth congress and demanded the post of state youth congress president. Later, Swabhiman Sangathan (Nitesh’s NGO) started a toll-free water helpline number in 2010 for residents of Mumbai. During an interview, questioning the intention of the BJP-Shiv Sena government on the issue of water in Maharashtra, Nitesh said,

They allege that the Municipal Corporation is disconnecting unauthorized water connections. Shiv Sena has unauthorized connections to two party offices in Chembur and Mahim. Why weren’t they disconnected?”

Swabhiman Sangathan entered the Guinness World Record in 2011 for providing employment to 25,300 unemployed youth. In 2012, under the name of his NGO, Nitesh started some training programs like Sindhudurg Tour Guide and Naukri Express to provide employment to the local youth.


In 2014, he won the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly election as a Congress representative from Kankavli constituency. He defeated Pramod Jathar of BJP by 25979 votes. In 2019, he quit Congress and joined BJP and won Kankavli constituency seat by 84,504 votes.

Objection to film release

Nitesh opposed the release of the Marathi film ‘Jenda’ (2009) as one of the characters of the film, Sada Malvankar, had the same name as his father. Later the film’s director Avadhoot Gupte dropped the scenes of Sada Malvankar from the film.

In 2010, the owner of a medical store named Chintu Sheikh in Uttar Pradesh filed a case of attempt to murder against Nitesh Rane. Talking to reporters, Chintu said,

Rane shot me at the Khar office of Swabhiman Sangathan, where I had gone to congratulate Rane on the birth of his nephew. Nitesh was annoyed by the offer of sweets as he had suffered a loss in business. ,

Later, during investigation, the local police came to know that Chintu was lying down as he was hit by a sharp object and not by a bullet. In 2012, following Sheikh’s appeal in the Bombay High Court, the case was transferred to the CBI.

Nitesh’s NGO Swabhiman Sangathan had set up some illegal vada pav stalls in Maharashtra in 2011. Later, the BMC removed all illegal stalls including Nitesh’s Chhatrapati Vada Pav Center in Powai.

In 2012, on Nitesh’s birthday, his supporters put up birthday banners and hoardings in various areas of Mumbai’s Bandra and Khar, for which an FIR was lodged against Nitesh and his supporters.

Comment on Gujarati Community

In 2013, he tweeted a controversial statement against Gujaratis. His tweet reads,

Wage Skies, Wage Hospitals, Wage Housing Societies..Soon Waze Mumbai! Either Gujju go back to Gujarat or make Mumbai Gujarat..Red Alert!

Later, when reporters asked him about his statement, he said,

All I am saying is that the Gujaratis living here should know where they belong and where is their loyalty. They live in this city and earn their livelihood, but praise Modi and the development model of Gujarat. Such people should leave Mumbai and go to Gujarat.

Arrested for misbehaving with government official

Nitesh was arrested on 12 July 2017 for throwing fish at a government official in Maharashtra’s Sidhudurg district. The incident happened during his meeting with the fisheries commissioner of Sindhudurg. He was later released on bail.

Government official attacked with mud

In July 2019, he was arrested again for misbehaving with a government official. This time he threw mud at Deputy Engineer Prakash Khedekar. According to media sources, Nitesh was unhappy with the condition of the Mumbai-Goa highway. He was arrested by the local police under IPC 353.

Lookout Circular for Unpaid Loans

In 2021, a lookout notice was issued against Nitesh and his mother in a loan default case of more than Rs. 65 crores. The notice was circulated by the crime branch of Pune Police.

Shiv Sena worker attacked

Reportedly, in December 2021, while campaigning for the Sindhudurg District Co-operative Bank election, he allegedly attacked Shiv Sena worker Santosh Parab. In February 2022, his bail plea was rejected by a court in Sindhudurg district of Maharashtra.
