Some lesser known facts about OP Sharma

• OP Sharma was an Indian magician and illusionist. He has performed more than 39,000 magic shows nationally and internationally.

• When he was studying in class 2, he started taking interest in performing magic tricks. In an interview, while talking about developing an interest in magic tricks, he said,
  

  It all started when I was in second grade, about 7 or 8 years old. I did a short act and it was appreciated by students and teachers alike. I became the center of attraction and started performing magic tricks on Fridays every week.

• Initially, his family did not support him to pursue a career as a magician, but his elder brother supported him. Talking about this during an interview, OP Sharma said,
  

  No one in my family had a witchcraft background. But, my elder brother was my driving force who supported my interest. I still remember that he used to accompany me on summer vacations and work with me on magic tricks. As I grew older, I began to read books about magic and continued my studies in parallel.”

• In 1971, he got a job as a designer at the Small Arms Factory, Kanpur. They did magic shows together. His first show was in Shastri Nagar Colony, Kanpur, while his first commercial magic show was in Mumbai.

• Thereafter he performed in various magic shows in different parts of India. Soon, he started gaining popularity with his magic tricks. His magic show began with a man walking out of an empty box. He believed that performing magic tricks is an art and a science. The name of his magic show was ‘Indrajal’. Later, his son joined him as a magician and performed under the name OP Sharma Jr.

• He built his house named ‘Bhoot Bangla’ in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh. The infrastructure of his house is like a haunted house.

• In 2001, he received the National Magic Award and the title “Shahensha-e-Jadu” (King of Magic) from the Indian Magic Media Circle.

• He once contested for the Samajwadi Party from Govindnagar Legislative Assembly seat. However, in 2019 he joined the BJP.

• OP Sharma started a magic show group named ‘Prakash Magico’ and there were more than 13 magicians in his group.

• His favorite quote was,
  

  Life is magic and magic is my life.”

• During an interview, he talked about his inspiration as a magician. he said,
  

  I have always tried to learn from others, imbibe whatever good qualities they have. I was really enthralled by the show of Magician Ke Laal and he inspired me to make my show great. Presentation is important in this area.
