Sawan Kumar Tak (1936–2022) was an Indian film producer, screenwriter, producer and lyricist. He worked primarily in the Hindi film industry and is known for directing superhit films like Saajan Bina Suhagan, Souten, Souten Ki Beti, Sanam Bewafa and Bewafa Se Wafa. He is credited with directing more than nineteen films in Bollywood. He died of a heart attack on 25 August 2022 at Kokilaben Ambani Hospital in Mumbai.

According to Sawan Kumar, he was in love with veteran Indian actress Meena Kumari when he was in the early days of his career in the Bollywood film industry. He was then in his early twenties. In an interview with a media house, he revealed that he closely experienced Meena Kumari’s life tragedies in the last days of her life. he said,

Rose and handsome men could not overcome her tragedies. ,

In the same discussion, Sawan Kumar said that he had joined her. She said that once, she took him to her bedroom and told her life’s imitation stories, and he couldn’t stop laughing all night. he said,

But I had fallen in love with him. One night she took me to her bedroom. Her image was that of a tragedy queen, but she was actually a great mimicry. I couldn’t stop laughing at the stories he told. Then she spread rose petals on her bed and fell asleep. I sat on the carpet and fell asleep with my head on the bed. When I came out of the room the next morning, Khurshid apa asked me sarcastically, “Did you sleep well?”

Sawan Kumar continued to say that Meena Kumari was suffering from liver cirrhosis, and raised her by taking her vomit of blood in her hand, wiping her face and putting her to sleep. Meena Kumari was also noticing all his love and care, and once, she told Sawan Kumar that he was like a god to her. Meena Kumari said,

You are the first person in whom I have seen God. You deposit the blood I vomited in your hands. Not once do you show displeasure. No one has ever done this for me.”

According to some media sources, Meena Kumari and her husband separated in 1960 and divorced in 1964 due to some men in her life including filmmaker Sawan Kumar Tak. He was one of the people who attracted Meena Kumari in her late thirties. She was attracted to him when he was in her early twenties, and she was in her late thirties.

It was Sawan Kumar Tak who launched veteran Indian actors Sanjeev Kumar and Mehmood Jr aka Naeem Sayyed in the Indian film industry. Once, he saw Sanjeev Kumar’s performance in a theater and promised him that he would launch him in his first film. In 1967, he directed his first film Naunihal, starring Sanjeev Kumar in the lead role. In the same year, the film received several awards and accolades from the Government of Maharashtra. It was Sawan Kumar who named actor Harihar Jethalal Jariwala as Sanjeev Kumar. After this he released the film Gomti Ke Kine in 1972 which started in 1968. Veteran actresses Meena Kumari and Mumtaz acted in this film. The songs of the film were composed by the music director, RD Burman, The film’s release was significantly delayed due to the untimely death of Meena Kumari. It was his last film and was released after his death.

In 1983, he directed the film Souten, which was a platinum jubilee hit at the box office. The film was portrayed by Sawan Kumar in Mauritius, starring Rajesh Khanna, Tina Munim and Padmini Kolhapure.

He used to write and compose songs for his films. In his movie Sauten, the famous song “Zindagi Pyaar Ka Geet Hai” was composed by him. He is best known for composing famous Hindi songs such as “Barkha Rani Zara Jamke Barso” for the 1973 film ‘Sabak’, which starred veteran actors Shatrughan Sinha and Poonam Dhillon in lead roles. Later, he wrote the popular songs “Hum Bhool Gaye” from the movie Souten Ki Beti and “Yeh Dil Bewafa Se Wafa” from the movie Bewafa and the legendary Indian singer. Death

Sawan Kumar Tak passed away on 25 August 2022 at the age of 86 in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India due to prolonged illness. Soon after his death, his PRO Mantu Singh announced in a media interview that Sawan Kumar Tak was suffering from heart problems for two days. Mantu Singh said,

Sawan ji was 86 years old. She was not married. He had heart problem for two days. After which he was admitted to Kokilaben Ambani Hospital. He died of a heart attack at around 4 pm today.

Facts / Trivia

  • According to Sawan Kumar Tak, he shifted from Jaipur, Rajasthan to Mumbai in 1967 with a desire to become an actor in the Bollywood film industry. However, he was rejected by two or three film studios in Mumbai and was disappointed with the same. This prompted him to move to the other side of the entertainment industry and decided to work as a producer. Then he asked his sister to lend Rs. 25,000 so that he could produce his film, but he refused to lend her the money. Thereafter, she was helped by her brother-in-law, who arranged some money for her to start her career in Bollywood.
