Mystery of Pallavi Dey’s death
Bengali television actress Pallavi Dey was found dead in her rented flat in Garfa, Kolkata on 15 May 2022. It was Saagnik who first found Pallavi’s body hanging from the ceiling fan. He immediately informed the police and Pallavi’s parents. According to some sources, there was a heated argument between Saganik and Pallavi on the morning of 15 May 2022 after which Chakraborty went out to buy some cigarettes. On returning he saw that the door was locked from inside. Sagnik breaks open the door and finds Pallavi hanging from the ceiling fan. The police who reached the spot took Pallavi to MR Bangur Hospital in Kolkata, where doctors declared her brought dead. Based on preliminary investigation, the police is finding it to be a case of suicide. Talking to the media, the investigating officer of the case said,
The actor was found hanging from the ceiling fan with the help of a bedsheet. The incident happened around 9:30 in the morning. A case of unnatural death has been registered.”
Prima facie it appears that it is a case of suicide. However, the final conclusion can be drawn only after the post-mortem report comes. We have started investigation after registering a case of unnatural death.”
Pallavi’s parents made allegations
After Pallavi’s death, her parents got suspicious. He accuses Sagnik of defrauding Pallavi financially and informs the police that Sagnik had forced Pallavi to pay for an apartment that they (Pallavi and Sagnik) had bought in Rajarhat. During a conversation with the media, Pallavi’s father Neelu Dey said,
My daughter loved Saganik very much. Saagnik was using a luxury car which he had gifted him. Pallavi used to give expensive gifts to Sagnik on different occasions. They had three joint bank accounts.”
Her parents told the police that Pallavi and Saknik had bought a flat in Newtown for Rs 60 lakh, for which Pallavi paid. However, the flat was registered in the name of Sagnik’s father. He also accused Pallavi of mental torture and cheating. Talking to a media person, Pallavi’s father said,
Her partner had a registered marriage with someone else two years back and we came to know about it six months back. There was another girl he was close to and this often caused trouble in their relationship. We don’t know who saw him hanging.”
Some of Pallavi’s relatives alleged that there was a fixed deposit of Rs 15 lakh in the name of Pallavi, whose nominee is claimed to be a Sagnik. Though her autopsy report revealed that she had committed suicide, Pallavi’s father had lodged a complaint against Sangnik Chakraborty at Garfa police station alleging mental and physical harassment. He alleged that no one was around when Pallavi was found dead.
Denying all the allegations leveled by Pallavi’s parents and relatives, Saganik’s mother said,

Further, refusing all allegations that Pallavi paid for Sagnik’s luxury car and a flat he bought in Newtown, Chakraborty’s mother said,
The allegations are baseless. Pallavi did not pay for the car or the flat. I gave Rs. 9 lakh to buy a luxury car. We also bought the flat in Newtown and not Pallavi.”
Following a complaint from Pallavi’s father, Saganik was called to the Garfa police station for questioning. The police questioned him for about 18 hours and according to some sources there were many discrepancies in his statements. He also hid vital information about his employment and his joint financial investments with Dey. Talking to a media person, a police officer said,
We asked him about his job as he claimed he was working with a data center. We asked him when was the last time he came to the office when we do multiple transactions with many people from his account. The transactions ranged from Rs 25,000 to Rs 30,000. He claimed that he had stopped going to office a week ago due to personal reasons. We spoke to a few people to whom they transferred money from time to time recently. He claimed that Chakraborty had paid him regularly and that he had used Shane’s name in office. He stopped going to office when Kolkata Police, Bidhannagar Police and CID started raids against fake call centers across the city. Naturally, we are probing his possible links with any fake call centres.”
Meanwhile, the police also questioned Pallavi’s housewife Salima Sardar, who uncovered many shocking facts about Saganik. Reportedly, Salima told the police that Saganik’s rumored girlfriend Oindrilla had visited Pallavi’s flat several times in his absence.
Chakraborty was arrested by the Garfa police on the evening of May 17, 2022, after an intense interrogation for about 18 hours. According to Atul V, Deputy Commissioner of Police in-charge of Kolkata Police’s South Suburban Division, Sagnik Chakraborty was booked under IPC sections. Fraud, criminal breach of trust, criminal conspiracy and dishonest misappropriation of property. He further said that Chakraborty’s arrest was based on financial fraud committed by him and was not related to Pallavi’s murder.
