Saira Shah Haleem is an Indian politician, social and political activist, theater artist, educator and corporate trainer. She is known for being the niece of an Indian actor Naseeruddin Shah, In April 2022, he contested the Ballygunge assembly by-election as a Communist Party of India (Marxist) candidate.

Born in an army background family, Saira was brought up in various cities of India. She did her primary schooling at International Indian School, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and then went to Lawrence School, Lovedale, Tamil Nadu to pursue her secondary education. Saira did her graduation from Sophia Girls College, Ajmer.
Thereafter, he did his MA in English from the Faculty of Arts, Annamalai University, Chandigarh.

Saira’s father, Lieutenant General Zameer Uddin Shah, is a former Deputy Chief of the Indian Army. As of 2022, he is serving as the Vice-Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University, Uttar Pradesh. His mother’s name is Sabiha Simi Shah. she has two brothers. His elder brother, Major (Retd) Mohammad Ali Shah is an actor. His younger brother, Umar Shah, is the training lead at Tata Consultancy Services (TCS). He also has a sister named Nazli Shah.

Saira Shah Haleem is married to Dr Fuad Haleem, a politician and medical professional. Her husband runs an NGO (Clinic) named Kolkata Swasthya Sankalp, which aims to serve the poor sections. He founded Kolkata Swasthya Sankalp in 2006 along with Saira. The couple has two daughters, Noora Haleem and Farishta Haleem.
Saira Shah is the niece of popular Indian actor Naseeruddin Shah, Naseeruddin is the younger brother of his father Lt Gen Zamir Uddin Shah. His aunt Ratna Pathak Shah (wife of Naseeruddin Shah) is an Indian theater and television actress.
She is the daughter-in-law of Hashim Abdul Halim, former Speaker of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly.
Saira started her corporate career with Wipro in 2006. He worked there for about two years and then resigned from the company. Thereafter, he worked with top MNCs and corporate houses in training, learning and developmental roles.
Saira Shah started her political career in March 2022 as a member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist). On 29 March 2022, he was announced as the candidate of CPI(M) for the 2022 Ballygunge assembly by-election.
In an interview, recalling the day her candidature was announced, Saira said,
We were on our way to visit Assam when I got a call from the senior leadership asking if I can fight this battle. I was surprised but I was ready.”
The Ballygunge by-election was held on 12 April 2022 after the TMC’s bastion seat fell vacant with the death of veteran Trinamool leader and cabinet minister Subrata Mukherjee in November 2021. The singer turned politician and was contesting against the former Minister of State for Environment, Forest. , and Climate Change Babul Supriyo of Trinamool Congress (TMC), Saira actively campaigned.
During an interview, Saira revealed that though she was contesting for the first time, she was not at all new to politics. He said,
I’ve been there, done that. Politics has always been talked about at the dinner table in my house. Only this time I myself am the candidate. The party which has been an integral part of my life for the last two decades challenged me and I grabbed it.
Saira has worked in Poetry Couture, a free-standing initiative to revive the culture of reading poetry and prose. Saira has been invited several times as a speaker at the Kolkata Literary Festival. He is one of the founding members of Poetry Paradigm, a Kolkata-based non-profit organization. Other members of the club include Joi Bose, Ashok Viswanathan, Ananya Chatterjee and Arthur Cardozo.
Saira also contributes to the Kolkata-based blog The Beacon Kolkata. Shah has organized many cultural and literary programs in Kolkata. Haleem has also participated in a Sampark literary evening. In 2016, Shah presided over two sessions of the prestigious Tata Steel Kolkata Literary Meet. She has appeared as a speaker at several TEDx events.
She is a social activist and has worked for many relevant causes like gender equality and defense of democracy and secularism. In 2017, he acted in a short film ‘Ek Khas Aadmi’ based on social causes. The film was shown on NDTV Talkies.
Haleem is a member of the West Bengal Federation of United Nations Association. She has also been a part of Rotary Club of Ballygunge, a Kolkata based non-governmental organization which works for social causes.
Saira has been a part of several protests including protests against the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and the Citizenship (Amendment) Act. She was also against the ban on hijab in the classrooms of educational institutions in Karnataka. In 2021, he delivered an Independence Day speech at Oakridge International School in Mohali.

My father was posted in Punjab in the 1990s, when militancy was at its peak, and from 1998 to 1999, he was the commanding officer in Manipur during the ULFA (United Liberation Front of Assam) insurgency. I vividly remember going to school in large convoys, as there were always reports of army ambushes. ,

- In an interview, when asked if she could benefit from her husband’s political presence, Haleem replied,
I have my own reputation. I have actively campaigned against the National Register of Citizens and the Citizenship Amendment Act in Bengal and Delhi. I have been vocal on the rights of religious minorities, the issue of the hijab ban, and the rights of the LGBTQ+ community on all platforms – TV debates, digital conclaves and public gatherings. Local workers proposed my name to the party because I have my own political identity. I am going from door to door and talking to voters. I have my vision for the constituency.”
- During an interview, Saira revealed that she was very attached to her birthplace Kolkata. He said,
Due to my father’s posting, I lived in many places, I studied in a boarding school in Ooty, did college from Rajasthan. The army family has never been attached to any one place – this is how we were brought up – but it is Kolkata that has given me my identity. This is my city, and I am proud to serve the people of this state.”
