Sanket Mahadev Sargar is an Indian weightlifter who holds the national and Commonwealth record of 256 kg in the men’s 55 kg weight category. At the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, she won the silver medal by lifting a total of 248 kg.


Sanket Mahadev Sargar was born on Monday 16 October 2000.age 22 years; by 2022), and he is from Sangli, Maharashtra. His zodiac sign is Libra. Talking about the beginning of his passion for weightlifting in an interview, he said,

The children of our locality hardly play any other sport. I got into weightlifting when I was 13 years old.”

In 2012, his father enrolled him at the Digvijay Weightlifting Center run by weightlifting coach Nana Singhasane, which was located near his tea stall. Talking about his busy schedule in an interview, Sanket said,

When I started training in weightlifting, I even had to help him at the tea stall. My day used to start at 6 in the morning at the shop, where I would prepare stuff for the day before leaving for my training. After school, I used to manage the addition of paan as well.”

He attended Shivaji University Kolhapur, Maharashtra. From 2017 to 2021, Nana Singhasane’s son Mayur Singhasane started training Sanket. Before joining the National Weightlifting Camp in Patiala, Sargar assisted his parents in running a family-owned tea shop in Sangli. In Patiala, he started training under Vijay Sharma and Olympic silver medalist Mirabai Chanu,

Sanket Mahadev Sargar’s father’s name is Mahadev Sargar. His parents together run a tea stall-cum-paan shop in Sangli, Maharashtra. Talking about his humble background in an interview Sanket’s father said,

I used to tell him that my father sells bananas and I sell tea and pakora. So dream big.”

Her sister, Kajol Sargar, is also a weightlifter who won a gold medal at the Khelo India Youth Games (2022) in the women’s 40kg category. As of 2022, she is a student of science in Smt. Kasturbai Walchand College, Sangli, Maharashtra.

Facts / Trivia

  • On Sanket’s victory at CWG 2022, his father said that he would display his medal at the tea stall. he said,

    I tried my best to provide the best facilities for my kids to grow and be successful. We have kept the medal that Kajol won at our tea stall. Now a place is reserved for the medallion of the signal.

  • Sanket first dreamed of winning a medal at the Commonwealth Games in 2018 when he watched Indian weightlifter Gururaja Pujari’s performance at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games on TV while managing a tea stall; Won silver medal in the Games.
  • Mayur sent him a barbell and squat set to train at home when the Covid-19 pandemic disrupted Sanket’s training. Sanket used to train on the first floor of the house and suffered a back injury at that time. Troubled by a back injury and loss in family business due to the lockdown, Sanket thought of quitting the sport. In an interview he said,

    It was a time (lockdown) when I thought of quitting the sport. There was almost no business at my father’s tea shop and the practice at home meant I had a back injury. But my father continued to inspire me by showing me old newspaper clips of my medal-winning performance.”

  • Upon arriving in Bhubaneswar to compete in the 2022 IWLF Youth, Junior and Senior National Weightlifting Championships, he found that his weight was 1.7 kg more than the permissible limit. As a result, he went on a crash diet to lose the extra weight.
  • During his third attempt at the clean and jerk at the Commonwealth Games 2022, Sanket failed to lift 139 kg and injured his right hand.
  • In an interview, after CWG 2022, he expressed his desire to compete in the 61kg category in the 2024 Olympics and said,

    I want to make it to the 2024 Olympics and I have to move up to 61kg. It will be a huge leap and it will take me two years to fully prepare for it, but I am determined to get there.”
