Shirin Abu Akle was a Palestinian-American journalist, best known for working as a reporter for Al Jazeera’s Arabic-language channel for over twenty-five years, after being shot by Israel Defense Forces on 11 May 2022. Later he died.

Shireen started her career in 2014 as a reporter for Radio Monte Carlo and Voice of Palestine. She has worked for UNRWA, Amman Satellite Channel and MIFTAH. In 1997, she joined Al Jazeera as a journalist and became a reporter on the Arabic language channel. She used to cover major events related to the politics of Palestine and Israel.
Shireen attracted controversy when a fellow journalist, Ali al-Samoudi, who was also shot during coverage of the raid, alleged that Shireen was shot by the Israeli military. He said there were no Palestinian armed fighters at the scene. He talked about this in an interview and said,
The first bullet hit me and the second bullet hit Shirin. They killed him in cold blood because they are killers and they only specialize in killing Palestinian people. There was absolutely no Palestinian military resistance at the scene.”
The Israeli military said they launched an operation in the Jenin refugee camp, but did not target journalists.
On 11 May 2022, while Shireen was reporting on the IDF raid in Jenin, she was shot dead by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). His death was reported by the Palestinian Ministry of Health. Raids were being conducted to nab the terrorist suspects. Shirin was admitted to the Ibn Sina Hospital after being shot, but was pronounced dead. A news source said that Palestinian militants fired on IDF soldiers, which led to IDF soldiers retaliated. Reportedly, he was shot in an unprotected area under his ear and was deliberately targeted. The Prime Minister of Israel, Naftali Bennett condoled his death and said,
According to the information we gathered, it appears that armed Palestinians – who were firing indiscriminately at the time – were responsible for the unfortunate death of the journalist.”
