In 1980, when Shivangi was shooting for the Hindi film ‘Kismat’, she met Shakti Kapoor for the first time on the sets of the film. Initially they became friends and later fell in love with each other. They dated secretly for about two years and then decided to get married. Shivangi’s parents were strict and when she expressed her desire to marry Shakthi, her parents locked her in a room. He did not like Shakthi as he was 12 years older than Shivangi and disliked Shakthi’s negative roles in films. On 13 December 1982, Shakti and Shivangi had a court marriage. Recalling those days during an interview, Shakti said,

Shivangi and I eloped and got married. He is Maharashtrian and I am Punjabi. I played the villain and my reputation was not good. Her family was not ready for the marriage, so we had to elope. She was 18 when we got married (in 1982). When she was 19, my son Siddhant was born. Shivangi’s mother spoke to her for the first time after our marriage when she came to visit him at Breach Candy Hospital.

Shivangi’s family was not ready for our relationship. When my father Sikandarlal Kapoor came to know about it in Delhi, he decided not to talk to me. My mother asked him to meet the girl once. As soon as he saw Shivangi, who is 10-12 years younger to me, she is such a lovely child (he said she is really nice). She sang two lines and my father stood up and asked how she sings so well. I said that Lata ji is his cousin, he stood up and said, “Teri sab galtiyan maaf (All your mistakes are forgiven), because you have married into such a big family.” He asked her to sing Lata ji’s song and told that he is a big fan of her. As soon as Shivangi sang the song, he became emotional.
