After that he appeared in a few more Hindi music videos. In 2001, he participated in the Grasim Mr India contest and won the title. After working as a model for a few years, he got tired of it and headed towards theatre. Talking about this in an interview, he said,
I had been modeling for about three-five years and was tired of it. It was getting a bit stale for me, walking up and down the ramp, changing clothes, was not inspiring me. It really wasn’t stable enough for me; I wanted to do something that would inspire me more. So, I started doing theatre, and understanding acting and seeing what I could do on stage really made a difference. ,
Later, he was spotted by the team of Balaji Telefilms in one of his music videos. The team offered him a TV serial, but it went cold. In 2004, he was again called for a TV serial by Balaji Telefilms. I was almost reaching the top of the ladder and the only name ahead of me was Ronit Roy. I turned down and declined some offers because it wasn’t taking me anywhere. And at that point, an abrupt shift was taking place, where a lot of people who worked on television moved to movies and left us with a disapproval of small-town actors who were too disrespectful and didn’t speak very well. I just felt like this was no longer the place for me. I also lost a lot of work in television. I’ve had many fights to get the right screen space on television; There were people who were defaming me. I couldn’t find work, and eventually, lost a lot of work. But I made sure it didn’t weigh me down. I went to movies, but yes, I had a very tough time as no one was willing to give me a part in anything. And for five years, I had to sit at home and do nothing, it was very difficult.
